November is winding down the same way every month does but this particular instance of a month, November of 2012, has been a memorable one. I was able to do and witness a few things that I had not been able to experience throughout the years ever since I became an adult.
I was able to cast a vote in a meaningful election for the first time. I was able to participate in a campaign and help elect a candidate that I believe is most aligned with my vision of the future. Furthermore, my faith in humanity has been restored to a certain extent.
My vote, although it was just a single one amongst millions of others, it incremented the total in one column by one. It was not ignored, not destroyed and not rigged. I keep saying that the alternative of the democratic system we have here is pretty ugly and is basically the combination of the opposites of the aforementioned plus a few more nuisances.
For the past couple of years leading up to election day, I was slowly starting to believe that the influx of unlimited amounts of money can influence the way people view certain matters and can ultimately distort facts and realities. I was afraid that by having all the means to keep broadcasting the same message, regardless of its authenticity, through every possible venue will pave the way for all of us to the peak of the cliff that is total ignorance.
My doubts and fears were eradicated a little after 10 pm on Election Tuesday. The theory that money controls everything became a fallacy, at least for the time being. Thank you America! Thank you for giving me the opportunity to experience so much in such little time. Thank you November; I will never forget you.
